Tiffany's Bistro: Big Bear Lake's Historic Wine Bar & Live Music Venue

Most restaurants don't come with a scandal. Tiffany's Bistro does. Step inside Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel and you're standing beneath a 57-foot stained-glass dome that once crowned a tango house in Paris during the "Golden Age of Brothels" — disassembled piece by piece, shipped across the Atlantic, and reassembled here in the San Bernardino National Forest. Look closely at the glass and you can still find small imperfections left by champagne corks from its Parisian nights. It's the kind of detail that turns a night out into a story you tell for years.

Since 1987, Tiffany's has been Big Bear Lake's gathering place for good food, craft cocktails, and live music — a mountain-town bistro with a past far more interesting than its neighbors.

A Dome With a Past

The centerpiece of Tiffany's Bistro is impossible to miss: a 57-foot Tiffany-style glass dome, the largest of its kind west of Chicago. Long before it hung above a dinner table in Big Bear Lake, it adorned a Parisian tango house and brothel. Carefully disassembled and shipped overseas, it was meticulously reassembled inside the historic Chateau — champagne-cork marks from its old life still visible if you know where to look.

In recent years, the hotel's owners completed an extensive restoration of the dome, reported at a cost of roughly $500,000, to preserve it as the room's centerpiece for another generation of guests. Diners consistently call it out as the detail that makes the space — "a beautiful elaborate glass dome" that "really makes the space feel special," as one recent guest put it after a dinner there.

What to Order

Tiffany's serves bistro-style dinner fare with a rotating happy hour menu. Guest favorites that come up again and again in reviews include the herb-crusted salmon with pilau rice, a tender NY steak, chicken marsala with mashed potatoes and charred broccoli, spaghetti bolognese, an apple cranberry salad, and Brussels sprouts off the happy hour menu.

Craft Cocktails & Private Label Wines

The bar program leans into the room's old-world glamour. Look for the Old Fashioned, an Italian Margarita, and the Bloody Mary among guest favorites, alongside a cocktail menu built around drinks like the French 75 à la Tiffany, the Vieux Carré, the Chandelier Commons, and the Ella Fitz Spritz. On the wine side, Tiffany's pours its own Private Label Chateau Big Bear wines — vintages selected exclusively for the hotel and priced to be an easy pour, not a splurge.

Live Music Friday & Saturday

Tiffany's is as much a live music venue as it is a restaurant. Pianist Mike Cross headlines regularly on Fridays and Saturdays, often joined by a rotating cast of guest musicians — drummers, bassists, and vocalists — playing everything from blues to jazz standards to original compositions. Music typically runs 6 to 9pm, right in the middle of dinner service, so you can plan a table around a set.

Happy Hour

Happy hour runs from 4 to 6pm, with discounted small plates and drinks in the same room as the evening's live music lineup — a popular way to start a Friday or Saturday night without committing to a full dinner.

Host Your Next Event Beneath the Dome

Tiffany's Bistro is available for private events, from rehearsal dinners to milestone celebrations, set beneath the same restored dome that anchors nightly service. Reach out directly to start planning your gathering.

More History: From the Big Bear Inn to Chateau Big Bear

Tiffany's Bistro carries forward a legacy that goes back further than 1987. Before it was Chateau Big Bear, the hotel operated as the Big Bear Inn, once profiled in a February 1992 Inland Empire Business Journal feature as "the European Centre of California." Where Tiffany's stands today, the Inn's dining room was known as Orpheus, described in that same feature as a "Venetian-chinoiserie fantasy" of Victorian tableware, Murano chandeliers, and oriental paintings serving gourmet Continental cuisine. Next door, the Moonridge Lounge kept the evening going with a full bar, live music, and a dance floor, its walls dedicated to Greek, Spanish, and French impressionist art, while the Inn's Grand Foyer housed one of the largest collections of Greek Orthodox and Russian religious paintings outside of Greece.

Today's Tiffany's Bistro — with its restored 57-foot dome, live music, and craft cocktails — carries that same spirit of old-world elegance forward. You can read the original 1992 write-up in our hotel history archive.

Plan Your Visit

Tiffany's Bistro is located inside Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel at 42200 Moonridge Road, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315. It's open Friday and Saturday, 4 to 11pm, with live music both nights from 6 to 9pm. Thursday hours run seasonally, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning a Thursday visit. Tiffany's is walk-in only and does not take reservations. Whether you're staying at the hotel or just visiting Big Bear Lake for the evening, everyone is welcome, and validated parking is available on-site.

Ready to pull up a stool beneath the dome? Stop by Tiffany's Bistro on your next Big Bear Lake evening, or plan your stay at Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the story behind the Tiffany Dome?

The 57-foot dome above Tiffany's Bistro is the largest of its kind west of Chicago. It originally adorned a Parisian tango house and brothel during the "Golden Age of Brothels" before being carefully disassembled, shipped to Big Bear Lake, and reassembled inside the historic Chateau. Small imperfections in the glass — remnants of champagne corks from its Parisian past — are still visible today, and the dome recently underwent a roughly $500,000 restoration.

Is Tiffany's Bistro open to the public, or just hotel guests?

Tiffany's Bistro is open to everyone, not just hotel guests. It's a popular gathering spot for both Big Bear Lake locals and visitors passing through the village, whether you're stopping by for happy hour, dinner, or live music.

What are Tiffany's Bistro's hours?

Tiffany's Bistro is open Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 11pm year-round, with dinner service each evening. Thursday hours run seasonally, so it's worth checking ahead if you're planning a Thursday visit.

Does Tiffany's Bistro have live music?

Yes. Tiffany's hosts live music Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 9pm, featuring pianist Mike Cross and a rotating lineup of guest musicians.

Is there a happy hour at Tiffany's Bistro?

Yes, happy hour runs from 4 to 6pm with discounted food and drinks, ahead of the evening's live music.

Does Tiffany's Bistro take reservations?

No, Tiffany's Bistro is walk-in only and does not accept reservations.

What kind of food and drinks does Tiffany's Bistro serve?

Tiffany's serves bistro-style dinner fare — guest favorites include herb-crusted salmon, NY steak, and chicken marsala — alongside a craft cocktail menu featuring drinks like the Old Fashioned, Italian Margarita, French 75 à la Tiffany, and Vieux Carré, plus Private Label Chateau Big Bear wines.

Can I host a private event at Tiffany's Bistro?

Yes, Tiffany's Bistro is available for private events and special occasions beneath its historic dome.

What did this space used to be before Tiffany's Bistro?

Before Chateau Big Bear, the hotel was known as the Big Bear Inn. Its dining room, Orpheus, served gourmet Continental cuisine in a "Venetian-chinoiserie" setting, while the adjoining Moonridge Lounge offered a full bar, live music, and dancing surrounded by Greek, Spanish, and French impressionist art. Tiffany's Bistro continues that legacy of old-world elegance today.

When searching for the perfect big bear lake lodging, travelers encounter a vast spectrum of choices that range from weathered, rustic bungalows to sprawling, high-traffic resorts. This variety often creates a persistent dilemma for the discerning guest. You might crave the secluded privacy of a mountain cabin but find yourself unwilling to forgo the attentive service and refined amenities of a luxury hotel. It's a choice between the charm of solitude and the comfort of professional care.

This is where the concept of refined mountain living emerges as the essential middle ground. It's a philosophy that prioritizes the soul of the forest while embracing the precision of modern hospitality. Boutique lodging serves as a curated, intimate alternative to mass-market chain resorts, offering a space where every detail feels intentional rather than industrial. It's about finding a sanctuary that feels both aspirational and deeply personal, where the architecture whispers of heritage while the amenities speak to modern desires.

The Evolution of Mountain Accommodations

The history of mountain stays has shifted dramatically from the utilitarian ski lodges of the past toward the high-end retreats of today. Many properties in the region carry a distinct 1980s mountain legacy, characterized by heavy timbers and cozy proportions. The most successful modern sanctuaries respect this heritage through thoughtful renovations that harmonize rugged bones with contemporary elegance. This evolution ensures that a stay feels anchored in history yet perfectly aligned with modern expectations of comfort and style. It's a transition from basic shelter to an immersive sensory experience.

Why Boutique Hotels Outshine Traditional Rentals

While independent vacation rentals offer a sense of home, they often lack the consistency that defines a truly restorative escape. Boutique hotels provide a level of reliability that removes the guesswork from your journey. You won't have to wonder if the linens are crisp or if the fireplace is operational. Instead, you benefit from "invisible" luxuries that elevate the experience without demanding your attention. Choosing high-quality big bear lake lodging means your only responsibility is to breathe deeply and enjoy the stillness.

Professional Housekeeping: A standard of cleanliness that ensures your sanctuary is pristine upon arrival.

On-Site Dining: The convenience of refined flavors at Tiffany's Bistro without needing to navigate traffic.

Curated Common Spaces: Access to a heated pool or a tranquil hot tub designed for communal relaxation and quiet reflection.

The emotional peace of mind that comes from professional, on-site hospitality allows you to fully surrender to the environment. When the logistics are handled by experts, you're free to focus on the internal journey of renewal and the quiet wonder of the San Bernardino National Forest.

The Boutique Distinction: Elevated Living at 6,892 Feet

At an elevation of 6,892 feet, the world feels fundamentally different. The air carries a distinct, crystalline clarity, and the light filters through the canopy of the San Bernardino National Forest with a gentle, golden hue that seems to soften the edges of reality. Choosing a boutique sanctuary for your big bear lake lodging means stepping into a space where this natural grandeur is mirrored by human artistry. It's an environment designed to slow your pulse and invite a deep, rhythmic breath. When you prioritize this refined approach, you aren't just booking a room; you're securing a specific frequency of peace.

The "Chateau aesthetic" defines this experience through a sophisticated marriage of European refinement and rugged mountain beauty. Imagine the graceful lines of French-inspired architecture standing in harmonious contrast to the raw, unyielding textures of the alpine terrain. As the sun dips below the ridgeline, the restorative power of starry nights becomes undeniable. Away from the persistent glare of urban centers, the sky reveals a velvet depth that encourages reflection and quiet wonder. This stillness is the ultimate luxury, providing a rare opportunity to reconnect with your own internal rhythm.

Architecture and Atmosphere

The physical structure of a boutique retreat plays a vital role in the recovery process. By utilizing a palette of stainless steel, reclaimed wood, and natural stone, the environment achieves a "mountain chic" vibe that feels both grounded and modern. These materials create a tactile connection to the earth, reminding you of the landscape even when you're indoors. Communal spaces, such as the heated pool or the outdoor hot tub, serve as centers for peak recovery. After a day of exploration, submerging in warmth under the open sky acts as a sanctuary from the frantic pace of daily life, allowing your muscles and mind to reach a state of total repose.

The Art of Mountain Hospitality

There's a palpable soulfulness in boutique hospitality that corporate luxury often lacks. It's the difference between being a room number and being a guest in a private home where your emotional well-being is the priority. The staff acts as a friendly guide, offering local insights with a warmth that feels genuine and unhurried. Every detail is intentionally curated, from the subtle lobby scent of pine and amber to the soft, layered lighting that mimics a sunset glow. If you're ready to trade the impersonal for the intentional, you might find your perfect retreat among our curated mountain suites. This level of care ensures that your stay at a premier big bear lake lodging destination isn't just a trip, but a transformative experience.

Selecting Your Ideal Suite: A Framework for Romance and Recovery

Choosing the right big bear lake lodging shouldn't feel like a logistical chore; it should feel like the first intentional step in your restorative journey. To find your perfect match, it's helpful to consider the "Job to be Done" during your stay. Are you seeking a quiet haven for solo reflection, a spacious base for a multi-generational gathering, or an intimate sanctuary for a romantic escape? By identifying the emotional outcome you desire, you can select a suite configuration that acts as a catalyst for that specific experience during your four-season mountain lake escape.

The distinction between a King Room and a Queen Room often goes beyond the physical dimensions of the bed. A King configuration typically anchors a space designed for couples or solo travelers who prioritize expansive, uninterrupted rest. Conversely, rooms with dual Queen beds offer a versatile layout for friends or small families who value shared experiences without compromising on individual comfort. Beyond the bed, the view serves as the room’s living art. You might prefer a balcony perspective that peers into the deep greens of the forest, or perhaps the rhythmic, tranquil energy of a poolside view is what your spirit requires to truly settle.

The Romance Suite: Fireplaces and Jetted Tubs

For those seeking to rekindle a connection, certain mountain luxuries are non-negotiable. There is a primal, evocative quality to a crackling fire that a standard heater simply cannot replicate. Our suites featuring in-room fireplaces provide a warm, flickering glow that invites long conversations and quiet presence. This sense of intimacy is deepened by the inclusion of private jetted tubs. These aren't just for bathing; they are tools for physical and mental renewal. After a day spent beneath the canopy of the forest, the rhythmic pulse of warm water provides a sanctuary where the outside world finally fades away.

Elevated Perspectives: The Power of the Balcony Room

A private balcony bridges the gap between indoor luxury and the natural world, transforming your suite into an immersive alpine observatory. While standard hotel rooms often confine your experience to a window-only perspective, the Balcony Room allows you to step directly into the crisp mountain air. It's the perfect high-altitude perch for the "golden hour," when the sun dips low and the trees cast long, dramatic shadows across the landscape. This immediate access to the environment ensures that the transition from your morning coffee to your first trail walk is seamless and soulful.

Family Suites Reimagined

Traveling with a family shouldn't mean sacrificing the sophistication of a boutique experience. Our Family Suite is designed to maintain a sense of refined elegance while providing the practical space needed for connection. The layout is intentionally curated to allow for both shared moments and essential privacy, ensuring that every generation finds their own pocket of peace. Whether it's the children resting after a day at the lake or the adults sharing a glass of wine by the fire, the environment supports a harmonious balance that feels both spacious and inclusive.

Location and Lifestyle: The Moonridge Corridor Advantage

While the energetic pulse of the Village has its place, the Moonridge Corridor offers a more deliberate and refined alternative for your big bear lake lodging. This neighborhood serves as a sanctuary for those who value stillness over the constant hum of high-traffic tourist centers. Nestled in this quieter pocket, you're positioned as a central hub for the region's most iconic destinations. Within a 1.8-mile radius, you can reach the area's premier ski and snowboard destinations, the vibrant hiking and biking trails, or the boutique shops of the Village. This proximity effectively dismantles the myth that a peaceful retreat must be isolated from the action; here, you're simply choosing to live at a more graceful pace.

The Moonridge area is defined by its architectural poise and its seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. It's a place where the morning light hits the pines with a particular clarity, inviting you to step outside before the rest of the world wakes. By choosing this corridor, you're opting for an experience that feels less like a commercial stay and more like a private residence in the heart of the forest. If you're ready to secure your place in this sophisticated alpine neighborhood, you can explore our available suites and begin planning your escape.

Nature at Your Doorstep: Rathbun Creek and Beyond

Immediate nature immersion is a hallmark of the Moonridge lifestyle, particularly with the scenic Rathbun Creek Trail just a short walk away. This gentle path offers a rhythmic, sensory experience where the sound of moving water and the rustle of mountain mahogany create a natural soundtrack for reflection. For those seeking a more rigorous challenge, the trail connects to the deeper reaches of the San Bernardino National Forest. This physical journey often mirrors an internal discovery, where the act of climbing toward a ridgeline helps clear the mental fog of daily life, leaving you refreshed and renewed.

The Alpine Zoo and Moonridge Culture

The local culture in Moonridge is one of understated elegance and authentic mountain charm. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo stands as a sophisticated destination for those who appreciate wildlife conservation, offering a quiet space to observe rehabilitated animals in a setting that respects their dignity. Beyond the zoo, the corridor is dotted with hidden gems, from intimate cafes to local boutiques that avoid the generic feel of larger commercial centers. This specific neighborhood provides a soulful connection to the mountains, ensuring that your stay feels grounded in the true spirit of the high country rather than a curated tourist facade.

Cultivating Unforgettable Moments: Events and Dining at Altitude

Beyond the threshold of your private suite, the boutique experience unfolds into a wider world of sensory indulgence and shared connection. While your room provides the foundation for individual restoration, the property itself acts as a living sanctuary designed to nourish every aspect of your mountain journey. In this environment, the search for the ideal big bear lake lodging concludes not just with a place to rest, but with a destination that celebrates the art of living well at altitude. The transition from the intimacy of your fireplace to the vibrant energy of our communal spaces is effortless, ensuring your sense of peace remains uninterrupted.

Tiffany’s Bistro: Culinary Excellence

At the heart of this communal experience is Tiffany’s Bistro, an intimate space where refined flavors meet the rugged charm of the forest. boutique lifestyle hospitality

BIG BEAR LAKE, CALIF. December 10, 2024 – Nestled below the ski slopes of the San Bernardino National Forest and surrounded by the serene pines of Big Bear Lake, the reimagined Chateau Big Bear emerges as a beacon of boutique luxury after a transformative three-year renovation. Once a storied retreat for high society, this historic property now combines timeless elegance with modern mountain charm, creating a quintessential hideaway for travelers of all ages.

A Storied History Brought to Life

Originally built in 1987 as the Big Bear Inn, this French-inspired chateau was the vision of Paul Rizos, a Greek hotelier who sought to craft an exclusive executive retreat in the mountains. The property boasted millions of dollars’ worth of European, Asian, and Byzantine art and artifacts, including a grand Tiffany dome—now housed in the hotel’s Tiffany’s Bistro and valued at over $400,000—and over 65,000 square feet of authentic Portuguese and Italian Carrara marble. Known for hosting high-society gatherings and operatic events, the inn epitomized sophistication and culture.

Over the years, ownership changed hands, and some of the Chateau’s original grandeur faded. However, in 2021, an Australian hotelier family acquired the property, determined to restore its legacy while infusing it with contemporary comfort. Key elements of the original design, including the Portuguese marble in the lobby, Verona marble in the private event space, and dozens of handblown Murano glass chandeliers, remain as part of its rich tapestry.

Modern Mountain Comfort

Today, Chateau Big Bear welcomes guests with 80 thoughtfully renovated guestrooms and suites designed for comfort and a connection to the natural surroundings. Spacious accommodations feature cozy fireplaces, king or queen beds featuring plush pillow-top bedding, flat-screen TVs, abundant storage, and premium toiletries, providing a sanctuary for relaxation after a day of outdoor adventure.

The 3-acre property boasts amenities for every season, including a heated outdoor pool (seasonal), a relaxing hot tub, a game room, a fitness center, and private wedding and event facilities. Guests can also explore the scenic Rathburn Creek Trail, one of three scenic paths for nature enthusiasts looking to explore the stunning landscapes.

Chateau Big Bear’s proximity to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain ski resorts and complimentary ski shuttle steps from the property make it an ideal destination for winter sports enthusiasts.
Madame Butterfly - The Ballet at Big Bear Inn

A press clipping from the hotel’s history archive — originally published in Dance Magazine, reviewing the September 17, 1994 performance at the Big Bear Inn’s Olympian Theater.

Long before Tiffany’s Bistro hosted Friday-night piano sets, the Big Bear Inn (today’s Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel) staged an annual classical arts weekend dreamed up by owner Paul Rizos — part opera or ballet performance, part themed dinner and lecture. “Madame Butterfly — The Ballet,” reviewed below by Dance Magazine critic William Fark, was the fourth installment in that series, following earlier weekends honoring Mozart, Rossini, and Tchaikovsky. That Tchaikovsky weekend — and the “Tchaikovsky Letters” ballet this review references — is its own chapter in the hotel’s history, covered in Weekend Time Out.

Ballet Ecarte Olympian Theater, Big Bear Inn, Big Bear Lake, California September 17,1994 Reviewed by William Fark

California's Gold Rush ended around the turn of the century, but there's still treasure in them thar hills. Among the nuggets is Paul Rizos's Madame Butterfly--The Ballet at Big Bear Inn in the San Gorgonio Mounains.

Big Bear Lake, where ski boots outnumber toe shoes, is still far from becoming a cradle of culture. But Rizos's innovative theater and dance ventures have attracted visitors interested in something beyond outdoor activities. "The Passion of Puccini" is Rizos's fourth classically-themed event, after ones honoring Mozart, Rossini, and Tchaikovsky. It's a weekend package of lodging and entertainment, featuring an opera or ballet performance accompanied by a lecture/tea and themed dinner.

Rizos wrote the scenario, adapted the music, and choreographed Madame Butterfly, which is performed by Ballet Ecarte of Culver City. Artistic director Nadezhda Kalmanovskaiya danced Butterfly opposite Golden Koscuik as Pinkerton, with Stella Gardiner as Suzuki, Butterfly's friend and confidante. Four men and four women danced more than a dozen supporting roles.

Rizos's greatest strength here is his skill at adaptation and condensation. He concentrates on the story of love and betrayal, portraying Butterfly and Pinkerton's relationship in a series of solos and pas de deux. Butterfly's doubts and fears about giving up her family, national heritage, and religion, in addition to her suicide, are presented in kabuki-like dance and mime sequences.

Stage size (just wide enough for one grand jete) in the ninety-nine-seat Olympian Theater forces Rizos to be imaginative. He has devised tricky lifts and erotic couplings for Kalmanovskaya and Koscuik, extended Boishoi-style pointe sequences for her, and in-place leaps and fast turns in the air for Koscuik.

Given the physical limitations of the stage, the performances are noteworthy. Kalmanovskaya is tall but dances with a remarkable delicacy that suggests Butterfly's Japanese fragility. Her renunciation solo is very well done. Koscuik is reed slender but projects a convincing virility, especially in the smooth lifts. Gardiner is expert technique personified in her one brief solo.

And Rizos has fun with the corps de ballet. There's a geisha quartet that recalls both Busby Berkeley and the cygnets from Swan Lake, a comic drunk dance for the Bonze, and a male duet featuring kabuki villains with the most ridiculous fright wigs ever.

Will Templin's costumes, a bit overdone for the small theater, define the characters in dramatic style. Kevin Crysler's lighting is adequate.

Overture to Romeo and Juliet, the ballet portion of "Tchaikovsky Letters," created for last year's festival at Big Bear Inn, has been restaged and performed by London City Ballet. Madame Butterfly--The Ballet deserves a similar extended life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the classical arts series at the Big Bear Inn?

Throughout the early-to-mid 1990s, Big Bear Inn owner Paul Rizos staged an annual themed weekend combining a live opera or ballet performance with a lecture, tea, and themed dinner. The series began with an event honoring Mozart, followed by Rossini, then Tchaikovsky, and by 1994 had reached its fourth installment: Puccini, staged as “Madame Butterfly — The Ballet.”

Who reviewed Madame Butterfly — The Ballet?

The performance was reviewed by William Fark for Dance Magazine following its September 17, 1994 staging at the Big Bear Inn’s Olympian Theater, performed by Ballet Ecarte.

Is the Big Bear Inn the same hotel as Chateau Big Bear?

Yes. The Big Bear Inn described in this 1994 review is the same hotel now operating as Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel.

Does Chateau Big Bear still host live performances?

Yes, in a different form — Tiffany’s Bistro at Chateau Big Bear now hosts live music Friday and Saturday evenings. See Tiffany’s Bistro for details.

Weekend Time Out

A press clipping from the hotel’s history archive — originally published in the Inland Empire Business Journal, August 1993, under the headline “Tchaikovsky and European Elegance at Big Bear Prices,” by Alan Borgen & Kim Harty.

By 1993, the Big Bear Inn — today’s Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel — wasn’t just an escape into European antiques and themed rooms. It had become the stage for a summer-long Tchaikovsky lecture series and ballet season. Here’s the review in full.

When one thinks of Big Bear, it is usually the rustic cabins, great ski slopes and the quaint little gift shops that first pop into your mind, however, a stay at the Big Bear Inn will surely give you a new perspective of this lovely resort.

Located just below Bear Mountain ski lodge, and a stone’s throw away from Snow Summit, the Big Bear Inn has established itself as the European Centre of California.

What sets this European Chateau apart from other first-class hotels are its rich European furnishings and appointments that adorn the entire hotel.

As you enter the grand foyer, you are greeted by original 17th- and 18th-century etchings along with a magnificent Satsuma vase from Japan that proudly sits next to the beautiful stone fireplace.

As impressive as the lobby is, the 75-guest rooms and three suites are fit for a king. All of the rooms are decorated with antique furnishings, brocades, gas-burning fireplaces, marble bathroom counters and warmers in the bathrooms.

Although all of the rooms are special, it’s the specialty theme rooms that make the jewels in this crown sparkle.

Each distinctively unique, the rooms range in elegance from the “Don Giovanni” room which is richly decorated with tapestries and silks from Seville, Venetian antiques, and a room full of treasures which depict a Victorian interpretation of Don Juan’s female conquests to the charming “Contessa” room which is dedicated to the “Marriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and is a recreation of the stage set of Zaffirelli for the very first postwar Munich production.

If you’re looking for the perfect setting for that special business meeting, workshop, banquet, or even a wedding, the Big Bear Inn has a variety of rooms that can accommodate up to 200 people, along with various services and a full catering department that can make your stay memorable.

The Executive Suite, which is approximately 3,000 sq. ft., features three massive rooms with one king bed, a sitting room, conference table, bar, exercise room, a large jacuzzi, sauna and wet bar. Talk about the perfect hospitality suite!!

The restaurant Orpheus is a Venetian-chinoiserie fantasy composed of Victorian tableware, Murano chandeliers, oriental paintings and is accented with damask and silks, and offers a nice selection of gourmet continental dishes.

After dinner, the Moonridge Lounge, which is dedicated to Greek, Spanish and French impressionists, features a full bar, live music and a dance floor.

To further enhance your stay at the Big Bear Inn, Paul Rizos, who owns this marvelous resort, is also celebrating the 100th anniversary of Tchaikovsky’s death in a most dramatic way.

Rizos has chosen to highlight the great composer’s life with a three-hour lecture, which draws you into the life and times of Tchaikovsky, and by the end of the lecture, you feel that you actually went back in time.

If his dedication for accuracy and thoroughness isn’t impressive enough, the fact that he uses no notes during his three-hour lecture should surely impress you. In addition to the mid-day lectures, three different live shows include: Letters of Tchaikovsky, The Queen of Spades, and Tchaikovsky and Ballet: A Romantic Tale. These first-class presentations are performed by The Pacific American Ballet Theatre and The Overture Company of the Opera Pacific on the newly enlarged stage.

The performances take place on each Saturday from July 3 to November 20, and are priced at only $20. This includes coffee and cake during intermission.

Rizos, 37, whose family owns hotels in Greece, is an internationally acclaimed lecturer at classical music, as well as an accomplished stage designer, choreographer, writer and chef. He is a warm and charming man who takes great pride in enlightening, entertaining and introducing you to the wonderful world of classical music.

What makes his lectures remarkable is the fact that he spent many months and even went around the world researching the life of Tchaikovsky just so he could present an accurate portrayal of this great, yet troubled classical composer.

Special weekend and one-night special rates are available, as well as a full catering department that can handle any event big or small.

Sheila Moore, who is the executive manager, and is an accomplished historian and ballerina, oversees the daily operations of the inn. She will be happy to work with you on any party or event.

Considering all the attractions and accommodations the inn has to offer, it’s no wonder that this is one of my favorite weekend getaways, and to think, less than two hours away! The Big Bear Inn is located at 42200 Moonridge Road, Big Bear Lake. The phone number is 1-800-BEAR INN.

— Inland Empire Business Journal, August 1993. Alan Borgen is the co-host of “Table for Two,” a restaurant review show which airs Tuesday and Saturday nights at 6:30 p.m. on KVCR, Ch. 24 PBS TV.

The Same Hotel, Two Reviews

Much of the description here — the grand foyer, the Don Giovanni and Contessa rooms, Orpheus, the Moonridge Lounge — echoes an earlier 1992 profile, European Elegance at Big Bear Prices. Different writers, same hotel, same old-world details, eighteen months apart. Orpheus is now Tiffany’s Bistro.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the Tchaikovsky lecture series at the Big Bear Inn?

In 1993, the Big Bear Inn hosted a summer-long series of Tchaikovsky lectures and performances presented by the Pacific American Ballet Theatre and the Overture Company of Opera Pacific, held each Saturday from July 3 to November 20 for $20 per person, including coffee and cake during intermission.

What live performances were part of the series?

The series included three performances: Letters of Tchaikovsky, The Queen of Spades, and Tchaikovsky and Ballet: A Romantic Tale.

Who managed the Big Bear Inn in 1993?

Sheila Moore, described as an accomplished historian and ballerina, managed the daily operations of the Big Bear Inn and its events.

Is the Big Bear Inn the same hotel as Chateau Big Bear?

Yes. The Big Bear Inn, described in this 1993 feature, is the same hotel now operating as Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel.

European Elegance at Big Bear Prices

A press clipping from the hotel’s history archive — originally published in the Inland Empire Business Journal, “Restaurant Row” column, February 1992.

Before it was Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel, this hotel was known as the Big Bear Inn — and in February 1992, the Inland Empire Business Journal’s “Restaurant Row” column paid it a visit. The full text of that original review is preserved below.

This column is written for the business person who finds travel a necessity, as well as for those who believe that eating a fine meal with a very pleasant wine is a reward of travel and even life.

Each month we shall comment on different restaurants in the various cities that, I believe, are most often visited by business persons from the Inland Empire. These restaurants are chosen strictly on merit. All restaurants were personally visited. I plan to offer you brief surveys, in lieu of long reviews.

When one thinks of Big Bear, it is usually the rustic cabins, great ski slopes, or the quaint little gift shops that first pop into your mind; however, a stay at the Big Bear Inn will surely give you a new perspective of this lovely resort!

Located just below Bear Mountain Ski Lodge, and a snowball throw away from Snow Summit, the Big Bear Inn has established itself as the European Centre of California.

What sets this European Chateau apart from other first-class hotels are the rich European furnishings and appointments that adorn the entire hotel.

As you enter the Grand Foyer, you are greeted by original 17th and 18th Century etchings, along with two magnificent Satsuma vases from Japan that frame the massive fireplace. Behind the receptionist are Byzantine icons, which constitute one of the largest collections of Greek Orthodox and Russian religious icons and paintings outside of Greece. If those priceless antiques are not enough to wow you, a Renoir etching hangs nearby.

As impressive as the lobby is, the 75 guest rooms and three suites are fit for a King! All of the rooms are decorated with antique furnishings, brocades, gas-burning fireplaces, marble bathroom counters and floors, and even towel warmers in the bathrooms.

Although all of the rooms are special, it’s the 17 specialty themed rooms that really gives this inn that special ambiance.

Each distinctively unique, the rooms range in elegance from the “Don Giovanni Room” (which is richly decorated with tapestries and silks from Seville, Venetian antiques, and a room full of treasures which depict a Victoriana interpretation of Don Juan’s female conquests), to the charming “Contessa Room” which is dedicated to the Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and is a recreation of the stage set of Zaffirelli for the very first post-war Munich production.

The history behind each room is as rich as the furnishings, and although these rooms are higher priced, the intimate and romantic ambiance that is created is the ultimate get away for you and your loved one.

If you or your company are looking for the perfect setting for that special business meeting, workshop, banquet, or even a wedding, the Big Bear Inn has a variety of rooms that can accommodate up to 200 people, along with various services and a full catering department that can make your stay memorable.

The Executive Suite, which is approximately 3,000 sq. ft., features three massive rooms with one king bed, a sitting room, conference table, bar, exercise room, a large jacuzzi, sauna, and wet bar. Talk about the perfect hospitality or honeymoon suite!!

The restaurant Orpheus is a Venetian-chinoiserie fantasy, composed of Victorian tableware, Murano chandeliers, and oriental paintings, accented with damask and silks, offering a nice selection of gourmet Continental dishes.

After dinner, the Moonridge Lounge, which is dedicated to the Greek, Spanish, and French impressionists, features a full bar, live music, and a dance floor.

Owned by Paul Rizos, and managed by Sheila Moore, the Big Bear Inn is a delightful journey into European culture and elegance at affordable Big Bear prices!! For further information or for reservations, call 1-800-BEAR-INN.
